Hawaii Ironman

This weekend marks one of the biggest endurance events to visit the islands, the Hawaii Ironman.  Taking place in Kailua-Kona on the big island, the scope of this triathlon is really mind boggling.  It consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run!

If  you're in the area, I highly recommend checking it out.  Here's a  little more history on this epic event...

The inaugural “Hawaiian IRON MAN Triathlon” was conceptualized in 1977 as a way to challenge athletes who had seen success at a local biathlon. San Diego-based John Collins proposed combining the three toughest endurance races in Hawai’i – the 2.4-mile Waikiki Roughwater Swim, 112 miles of the Around-O’ahu Bike Race and the 26.2-mile Honolulu Marathon – into one event.

On Feb. 18, 1978, 15 people came to Waikiki to take on the IRONMAN challenge. Prior to racing, each received three sheets of paper with a few rules and a course description. The last page read: “Swim 2.4 miles! Bike 112 miles! Run 26.2 miles! Brag for the rest of your life!”

In 1981, the race moved from the tranquil shores of Waikiki to the barren lava fields of Kona on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Along the Kona Coast, black lava rock dominates the panorama, and athletes battle the “ho’omumuku” crosswinds of 45 mph, 95 degree temperatures and a scorching sun.

Now in its 34th year, the IRONMAN World Championship centers on the dedication and courage exhibited by participants who demonstrate the Ironman mantra that “ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. ®” On Oct. 13, nearly 1,800 athletes will embark on a 140.6-mile journey that presents the ultimate test of body, mind and spirit to earn the title of “IRONMAN.”

Team Furuichi & Aoshima finished 5-Under

As I get older and my golf game starts to decline, it's encouraging to see the next generation of golfers starting to take shape.  Last weekend the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association (HSJGA) conducted the final round of the 2012 Mixed Team Championship at Poipu Bay Golf Course. The team of Hana Furuichi and Kengo Aoshima finished in first place with a total score of 139. Second went to Aiko Leong and Shawn Lu (142) and third, Ciera Min and Tyler Munetake (146)

The Mixed Team Championship consisted of two-person teams–one boy and one girl from the 13 – 18 age division. The first round was played using Four-Ball Stroke Play and the second was played using Foursome Stroke Play. The challenging Poipu Bay Course played 6,117 yards for the Girls 13-18 and 6,499 yards for the Boys 13-18.

The Mixed Team Championship helps prepare Hawaii Team members compete in the similar Ryder Cup format Asia Pacific Junior Cup being played against the top junior golfers from Japan during the 6th annual Asia Pacific Junior Cup, happening November 1-3 at the Waikoloa Kings’ Course on the Big Island.

Keep it on the short grass, but more importantly, have fun out there!

All golfers from the USA and Europe are invited to play in the fun and friendly golf challenge. Experienced team captains have been nominated; Team USA has British Open Champion Stewart Cink as the Captain, and Team Europe is led by European Tour golfer Johan Edfors.

“I think this is a wonderfully innovative idea. In honor of the Ryder Cup year I think it is appropriate to expand the joy of golf with a truly global approach. And, I think that GameBook team’s creativity in utilizing social media and the latest technology is exceptional. Golf tournaments are fun and social, but they can be so much more with this new golf app. I will do my best to build to great Team USA.”, praises British Open Champion Stewart Cink.

“I had an opportunity to test this golf concept last year in a tournament between two nations, Sweden and Finland. It was very engaging and an extremely fun experience. I will recommend my fellow pros to join this contest. My vision is to have a diverse Team Europe, professionals and amateurs playing together.” says Johan Edfors, Captain of Team Europe in the GameBook Cup and three-time winner of European Tour events.

“Both in the US and in Europe we value the important landmark tournaments. The encouraging and inspiring culture deserves to be further embraced, and that’s what we are doing. GameBook Cup differs only by the fact that anyone can participate. And to make things more interesting, we will throw some nice prizes to random participants each week.” says Mikko Rantanen, CEO of GameBook Inc.

“We have managed to fine-tune our golf app and the supporting mobile technology into such good shape that we decided to put it to a real tough test. And of course, we wanted to offer an unforgettable golf experience to all golf lovers in the USA and in Europe.” says Kalle Väinölä, Founder of GameBook, PGA pro.

“The only thing a golfer has to do is to play a round of golf anywhere in the world and enter his or her scorecard using Golf GameBook. We will automatically include all scores from golfers who are registered respectively in the USA or in any European country”, continues Kalle Väinölä.

The world’s largest golf challenge will be held between July 30th and September 9th, 2012, and it is free for golfers and golf clubs.

Pro Bowl Says "Aloha Honolulu"

The NFL returns to Hawaii for the 2011 Pro Bowl. The annual contest of the AFC and NFC's best will take place Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at 7 p.m. ET at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.

Here's a few interesting facts and pics...

- The AFC team will feature two 4,700-yard passers in San Diego’s Philip Rivers and Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning.
- Last season’s Pro Bowl was the third highest scoring game in history with 75 points. The two teams score 82 points in 2000 and 107 points in 2004. The AFC won last year 41-34.

- Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez is tied for the all-time Pro Bowl record with five touchdowns. If he scores on Sunday he would surpass Jimmy Smith and Marvin Harrison for sole possession of the record. (I found out this season that Gonzalez likes breaking records and considers it an honor. He’ll be happy to get this one if he scores.)

- Two other 2011 Pro Bowlers, Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson and Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald have three career Pro Bowl touchdowns and can move up the chart this weekend.

- Gonzalez, Manning and linebacker Ray Lewis have all been selected to 11 Pro Bowl.

- The U is well represented with 10 players. Ten players named to the 2011 Pro Bowl roster played collegiately at the University of Miami, more than any other college program. The group includes Baltimore safety Ed Reed, New England safety Brandon Meriweather, Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis, New England defensive tackle Vince Wilfork, Houston wide receiverAndre Johnson, Indianapolis wide receiver Reggie Wayne, Chicago kick returner Devin Hester, New Orleans linebacker Jonathan Vilma, New York Giants safety Antrel Rolle and Carolina linebacker Jon Beason.

Sony Open Wrap Up

Jan. 17, 2011
By PGATOUR.COM

HONOLULU (AP) -- Mark Wilson barely had time to eat a sandwich, much less keep track of his round, when he arrived at the 17th green Sunday afternoon at the Sony Open and realized he had not made a single bogey during this 36-hole marathon.

His four-shot lead had dwindled to a stroke. Wilson was staring at a 12-foot par putt, and the closing hole was a par 5 that he had not been able to reach all week.
The thought was fleeting. The way his week had gone, the outcome was predictable.

"I thought about that before I hit the putt," Wilson said. "I haven't made a bogey all day, so why start now? It entered my mind, but when I was over the putt, I didn't think about it."

The putt curled in the side, and Wilson started his season with a win to earn his first trip to the Masters.
Wilson shot a 5-under 65 in the morning to take a one-shot lead into the afternoon round. With six minutes between rounds -- enough time to get a chicken sandwich and a fresh box of golf balls from his locker -- he closed with a 3-under 67 and held off late runs by Tim Clark and Steve Marino on different sides of Waialae.
Wilson's last trip to Augusta National was 2001 -- as a spectator.

"I get goose bumps thinking about it," he said.

He nearly got chills watching Marino give himself one last chance with a remarkable shot. Clark had already finished with a 64 and was on the practice range at 14-under par. Marino was 13 under and needed an eagle, which looked improbable when his drive splashed out of the bunker and onto the side of a hill.
With his feet in the sand, and the ball about chest-high on the hill, Marino lashed at it with a fairway metal and watched it hook onto the front of the green and stop 40 feet away.
"I saw the ball, and I thought, 'OK, eagle is going to be pretty tough for him to make.' It was one incredible shot," Wilson said.

Marino's eagle putt narrowly missed, and Wilson pitched to 4 feet and made a birdie he didn't need. He finished at 16-under 264 and earned $990,000 for his third career victory.
Clark, who started the final round five shots behind, birdied three of his last four holes. He had a 10-foot birdie putt on No. 8 slide by on the left, and he narrowly missed a 15-foot eagle putt on the last hole.
"It's a relief to get it in," Wilson said. "I'm just thrilled to be the champion."

Wilson played his final 40 holes at Waialae without a bogey. That proved significant twice during his final round, starting on No. 8. He hit a tree with his drive and had to punch out to the fairway, leaving him 150 yards away with his third shot and his lead at two shots. But he stuffed it to 7 feet for par, then birdied the ninth to expand his lead to four.

Tournament of Champions - Wrap Up

by: Staff and wire reports

KAPALUA, Hawaii -- Jonathan Byrd had a silver trophy at his side and a lei draped around his neck, a winner Sunday in the Tournament of Champions, even if the playoff didn't end the way anyone imagined.

"Pretty overwhelmed," he said.
The emotions went beyond his victory in the PGA TOUR's season opener when Robert Garrigus, the biggest hitter on TOUR, missed a 3-foot par putt on the second extra hole at Kapalua.

Just over three months ago, Byrd thought he might lose his card for the first time in his career. He was outside the top 125 on the money list, and not much was going his way.

Then came a hole-in-one in near darkness to win Las Vegas in a playoff, getting him to Maui for the Tournament of Champions. He made it two straight wins by closing with a 6-under 67, and winning despite the length advantage for Garrigus in the playoff.

"I can't sit here and not think about where I was toward the end of the season last year, fighting for my card," he said. "I'm just thankful, I'm overwhelmed, I'm grateful, all of the above."
Garrigus -- his name might as well be "gregarious" -- was thankful, too, despite a tough way to lose. He had a 12-foot eagle putt on the last hole in regulation that would have been enough to win. He failed to take advantage of his length on the par-5 18th in the playoff, hitting a poor chip that fooled him. And with a 9-iron to the green on No. 1 in the playoff -- Byrd his 3-iron -- he couldn't get it closer than 40 feet.

Garrigus ran it 3 feet by the hole, and tried to jam it in from there and caught the right lip.

"If you had told me this -- I'd have been in a playoff with one of the best players in the world -- I'd have said, 'Hey, bring it on and we'll get 'em next week," said Garrigus, who also shot 67. "It was a great week. I've lost about 133 golf tournaments, and it's not that big a deal. I get a nice check, and I get to go next week and relax and have fun."

They finished at 24-under 268.

Byrd had an 18-foot birdie putt in regulation to win. He had a 10-foot birdie on the 18th in the playoff to win. No putt came closer than his 50-foot effort on No. 1 in the playoff, the ball just touching the high side of the hole. He tapped in for par, and standing to the side of the green, began planning his next shot in the playoff at the par-3 second.

Garrigus put a sad end to it all.

"He just gave it a little too much gas, and missed the next putt coming back," Byrd said.
Byrd won for the fifth time in his career, and this was the biggest. He had never won on TOUR earlier than July. He had never beaten a field this strong, with only PGA TOUR winners from last year. And this one came with some perks. Byrd earned an automatic invitation to the Masters, and with his second win in the last two months, he is exempt for the U.S. Open.

Graeme McDowell nearly joined them in the playoff. The U.S. Open champion, coming off a dream season, matched the Plantation Course record with an 11-under 62 and finished one shot behind. McDowell had a 10-foot birdie putt on the last hole that just missed.

Steve Stricker, tied with Byrd and Garrigus going into the final round, shot 71 and tied for fourth with Carl Pettersson (68).

McDowell started the final round six shots out of the lead, and he told one of the locker room attendants that he probably would need a 59 to have any kind of chance.

He gave it quite a ride. He ran off four straight birdies early in the round to make the turn in 30 and get within range. After scolding himself for missing an 8-foot birdie try on the 12th, McDowell responded with four straight birdies, including a 20-footer down the slope on the 15th after playing a safe pitch.
"I never looked at the leaderboard," McDowell said. "I knew the guys were going to go low. I just kept my head down. When I birdied, 14, 14, 15, 16 ... I said, 'Hold on.'"

But with another dose of Kona wind -- that's when Kapalua is at its longest -- the 17th and 18th are not easy. McDowell can't reach the par-5 18th in two, but hit a risky pitch that flew toward the pin and checked up 8 feet short. His firm putt didn't catch all the break, and he had to settle for par for the fourth straight round.
"It was just a fun day out there," McDowell said. "This golf course is just 'green light' all day. You can see from the scoring, there's a lot of birdies, and it's a lot of fun."

It wasn't much fun for Stricker, who didn't stay in the lead very long.

Stricker chipped poorly on the first hole and made bogey, three-putted for par on the fifth, then hit two very tentative putts on the seventh hole for another three-putt bogey that left him four shots behind.
Ian Poulter closed with a 66 to tie for sixth -- he hasn't finished worse than that in his last five tournaments. He was joined by Matt Kuchar, who shot a 69.

The tournament ended with a bizarre twist, much like the rest of the week went.
It started with two-time defending champion Geoff Ogilvy having to pull out with 12 stitches in his finger from a freak injury in the ocean. The next day, Camilo Villegas was disqualified because of a rules violation that was reported through Twitter.

It ended with the first American winner at Kapalua in 10 years, something Byrd was made aware of earlier in the week.

"I said it was about time for an American to win," Byrd said. "I just didn't know it would be me."

Villegas Disqualified from the Tournament of Champions

by: Mark Lamport-Stokes
KAPALUA, Hawaii, Jan 7 (Reuters) - Camilo Villegas’s 29th birthday celebrations turned sour on Friday when he was disqualified from the PGA Tour’s Tournament of Champions for a rules violation spotted by a television viewer.

The Colombian had carded a one-under-par 72 in Thursday’s opening round, but he unwittingly violated Rule 23-1 at the par-five 15th where he twice chipped up to the green only to watch as his ball rolled back to him.

On the second occasion, he illegally flicked away a loose divot of grass as the ball was trickling back down the slope.
“I got word of this last night … and I just couldn’t do anything at that point in time,” Slugger White, the PGA Tour’s vice president of rules and competition, said in a statement.
“So this morning, I came in, I looked at the tape … and it was pretty obvious what happened.”
Rule 23-1 states: “When a ball is in motion, a loose impediment that might influence the movement of the ball must not be removed.”

Villegas should have incurred a two-shot penalty for his infraction. Instead, he completed his round and was therefore disqualified from the PGA Tour’s season-opening event for signing an incorrect scorecard.
“I went to him before I made any formal announcement, and he said he’d like to see it just to learn,” White said. “I told him what happened. He could not have been bigger. Obviously he wasn’t trying to do anything (illegal). He just didn’t know.”

After viewing the tape with White, Villegas agreed his infraction was clear-cut.
“While it is obviously a disappointing way to start the season, the rules are the rules,” the Colombian added. “When something like this happens, it’s important to me that you’re respectful of the game and the people involved.”

Villegas had booked his place in the elite, winners-only field at the Kapalua Resort with victory at last year’s Honda Classic.

His early exit from the limited-field event follows the withdrawal on Thursday of twice defending champion Geoff Ogilvy who pulled out before the start of the first round because of a badly cut right index finger.

Here's a look at the infraction:
